New Year’s Fishing
Happy New Year Everybody!
On the 2nd of January the herring fishing for 2021 has started in the fjords around Skjervøy. In the winter months it’s much easier for the fishermen to make their catch. The fish are in the fjords where the sea is much calmer than offshore and they find the herring in vast amounts. This activity attracts the orcas and humpback whales.
They take the opportunity to feed on an easier way. As the fishing vessel hauls in its net with hundreds of tons of herring the animals are coming from all directions. They have already learned that it’s going to be an easy meal. Some of the herring manage to come out of the net before it closes and they are shocked, stunned and cofused. The orcas pick them up one by one while the humpback whales are taking a mouthful of them. It’s a very intense scene to watch.
